A young woman was allegedly gangraped by an ex-police constable along with his accomplices at a government quarter near Jhadeswari temple in Puri, Odisha on Monday.

The incident took place when one of the accused, claiming to be a police officer, offered girl to the girl help.

On the pretext of dropping her home, the police officer took the girl to Puri district and gangraped her.

The matter came to light in the evening after the survivor registered a complaint at the Kumbharapada Police Station.

The girl was waiting for a bus near Nimapara terminal to go to her native village in Kakatpur, Puri district when four persons, one of them claiming to be a cop, offered her help.

“I live in Bhubaneswar, I was returning to my village from Bhubaneswar in a bus. I got down from the bus at Nimapara to have food and missed the bus. Later, when I was standing at the Nimapara bus terminal, a person introduced himself as a policeman by showing his identity card and offered help. When I denied, he along with three others forcibly dragged me into the car and took me to the government quarters in Puri,” said the survivor in her complaint.

The girl managed to get hold of a wallet and an identity card that purportedly belonged to a police constable identified as Jitendra Sethi.

“While two persons locked the quarters’ door from outside, two others raped me. After drinking, when they fell asleep I called a person through the window and managed to escape from the spot with the wallet of one of the accused, which contained a police identity card,” added the survivor.

The girl handed over the documents to the police after lodging a complaint at the police station.
