Saina Nehwal: From ace shuttler to politician | Off the field News

NEW DELHI: One of India’s ace shuttlers, Olympic medal-winning badminton player Saina Nehwal joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday to begin her political career. She still remains an active shuttler on the international circuit.

Here’s a look at Saina’s various achievements on and off the court:

– Saina, who hails from Haryana, was once the biggest poster girl of Indian badminton

– In 2009, she became the first Indian to win a BWF Super Series title by winning the Indonesia Open

– She is the only Indian to have won an individual medal in all major BWF events, i.e. – the Olympics (2012 bronze), BWF World Championships (silver in 2015 and bronze in 2017) and BWF World Junior Championships (silver in 2006 and gold in 2008)

– A bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics made her the first Indian badminton player to win a medal at the Games

– In 2015, the Saina became the world No. 1 women’s singles badminton player

– The 29-year-old Saina is still the only Indian to win two badminton singles gold medals at the Commonwealth Games (2010 and 2018)

– She has a total of 438 career wins (including singles, doubles and mixed doubles)

– Saina has played a total of 625 BWF tour singles matches and won 431 of them

– In the 2014 Asian Games Saina was part of the bronze medal winning women’s team. In the 2018 edition of the Asian Games he won a singles bronze

– Saina has also been conferred the Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Padma Bhushan

– She is currently 29 years old and is ranked 18th in the singles rankings.
